How Does TCM View Health and Illness/Injury?
Traditional Chinese Medicine, often abbreviated as TCM, is a longstanding healthcare system spanning back over 2000 years, and originating in ancient China. It bases itself in the core principle of health being a state of balance within the body, where extremes (either in diet, lifestyle, environment or other) become the cause of disordered and unhealthy states within the body. These unhealthy imbalances can then lead to injury, illness and disease.
With this understanding, the main emphasis of TCM treatment is to restore a healthy balance by addressing not only the symptoms of imbalance and disorder, but the imbalance itself as well as the underlying cause of imbalance. This is known as treating both root and branch (cause and symptoms). Only through treating the root can we restore and maintain healthy balance. Traditional Chinese Medicine takes a holistic approach to health, understanding that the body's many systems, parts and functions are interconnected; interacting with one another and effecting one another. Each individual, through the eyes of traditional Chinese medicine, is unique in his or her bodily environment, with individualized weaknesses and strengths in health, susceptibilities and responses to environmental and internal stressors. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this is known as an individual's constitution. It varies from individual to individual and varies over time and lifestyle changes within an individual. Above all, Chinese Medicine, and Cassandra, believe that health is not a final state to be achieved, but a continual process to be practiced.
